Chopin’s Nocturne op. 9 n. 2 has been a beloved masterpiece of piano lyrism since its conception. It is characterized by its ethereal melody and delicate harmonies of extraordinary expressive effectiveness, which create the dreamlike atmosphere that made it an immediate success when it was published and an enduring favorite among worldwide players thereafter. Following it success, Chopin had to play it so frequently that, to give the impression of "novelty" every time he performed it, he devised the expedient of varying the embellishments of which the Nocturne is very rich, with as many as fourteen different versions of certain attribution with modified ornamentation.
