Albéniz | Asturias - Suite espanola op. 47 (1890)
The exotic beauty of Albéniz’s Asturias achieved global fame through a twisted path. Originally written as a stand-alone piano piece, the composition was later incorporated in the Suite Espanola by its editor, who made evident his lack of knowledge of Spanish musical traditions attributing the mismatching name “Asturias” to a clearly Andalusian inspired composition. Peculiarly enough, while remaining mainly a locally executed piece in its original piano arrangement, Asturias became a global success only after Andres Segovia’s guitar transcription, which made it one of the most aspired pieces for classic guitarists.
